About This WebsiteStory so far . . . I have wanted to build my own website for a very long time. I was first inspired to do this when I saw a website of one of my net pals. His site was noting extraordinary, but I liked the idea of having a personal site. I have researched a lot for making this website a reality. After around four years of designing several not-so-great websites in different places of the web like Geocities, United Net, Tripod and Astahost, I finally caught the knack of it. I learnt up CSS, HTML, Javascript and bits of DHTML in the process. The final result of all these efforts is here for all of you to see. On this site . . . I have tried to be different about the design of this site, yet adhering to most of the principles of making a good website. I have not blindly followed any rules laid down by high-and-mighty website designers. I have listened to their advice and absorbed only those which seemed reasonable and implementable. The name of this site is influenced by Ayn Rand's novel Fountainhead. I was having a discussion on the naming of the novel with my friends Garga and Shubhadipa when the idea of naming my site struck me. The name was apt for the site and fitted perfectly. What lies ahead . . . In near future (I hope it will be near), I intend to buy a proper domain name for my website. Currently the prices have become an all time low and this, I guess, is the right time to buy one. After doing that the next logical step will be to move this website to a better web hosting service with support for advanced features that I intend to make use of. I specially like the idea of generating dynamic pages and custom error messages. This however is a quite costly affair, so most probably I will have to select a free domain hosting option. The only hitch being that most of those are ad based -- something that I hate to have on my web site. However GooglePages, like any other Google service, is almost sure to offer a lot of cool features in the days to come. So I might end up not changing the web host at all. I am personally waiting for a day when Google will be allowing us to use PHP or CGI. One particular advantage of this GooglePages is that it is damn fast; and till date I have never encountered any down time. So I am keeping my fingers crossed. Lastly I have a plan to write an article on "How to make your own website" for all those who like me would like to have a website and don't have a clue from where to start. This I hope will solve some of their troubles and research, which I had to go through for the last four years or so. |
